What is Acupuncture?

Acupuncture literally means “needle piercing”, the practice of inserting very fine needles into the skin to stimulate specific anatomic points in the body (called acupoints or acupuncture points) for therapeutic purposes. Along with the usual method of puncturing the skin with the fine needles, the practitioners of acupuncture also use heat, pressure, friction, suction, or impulses of electromagnetic energy to stimulate the points. The acupoints (acupuncture points) are stimulated to works by re-establishing proper functioning and balance of the body’s many physiologic processes and functions.

What can Acupuncture treat?

The World Health Organisation (WHO) endorses Chinese Medicine as an effective treatment for a wide variety of conditions. In fact, the WHO recommends acupuncture ahead of western medical treatment for the following conditions:

  • Chloasma
  • Choroidopathy, central serous
  • Colour blindness
  • Deafness
  • Hypophrenia
  • Irritable colon syndrome
  • Neuropathic bladder in spinal cord injury
  • Pulmonary heart disease, chronic
