Vitamin C can curb the growth of cancer cells according to New Zealand scientists who provided hard evidence to the connection between the vitamin C and killing “the big C” (cancer). Vitamin C kills cancer because cancer cells do not have the enzyme catalase to break down hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) into water and oxygen. Vitamin C tricks cancer cells into thinking it’s sugar, so the cancer sucks it up. The result: the tumor is killed from the inside out by the resulting H2O2.

What is vitamin C?

Ascorbic Acid, AKA vitamin C, is a water-soluble vitamin known for boosting the immune system. But vitamin C is also an antioxidant that has been linked to younger-looking skin, contributes to the health of teeth & gums, is required for production of collagen and enhances the absorption of iron, B-12, folic acid, B-6 and vitamin E. A mere 100 mg a day of vitamin C given to an infant can even prevent SIDS! (Not one baby in over 20 years, given “Klenner’s/Kalokerinos Ascorbate Therapy” is known to have died.)

How much vitamin C do we need?

Unlike other mammals, humans do not make his own vitamin C and the RDA* for an adult male is a meager 95 mg of vitamin C a day. That is low when you consider that a 150 pound healthy mammal producing their own vitamin C will make up to 14,000 mg per day.

In a cancer battle the amount of oral vitamin C that is needed can be extreme. When the upper limit is reached it is accompanied by gas, bloating or loose stools. However, when vitamin C is given at a dosage below bowel tolerance, in a few days it can generally be brought up to a higher dose. Using bowel tolerance, start with 1,000 mg of vitamin C taken with each meal. A few days later, add 1,000 mg more to one meal making it 2,000 mg at one meal and 1,000 mg at the others. A few days later add an additional 1,000 mg to yet another meal and so on. Slow down on adding more vitamin C if you have gas, bloating or loose stools.

For high doses of oral supplement of vitamin C avoid the sodium and calcium C forms. Instead, look for ascorbic acid with rose hips or just plain ascorbic acid. Keep in mind that 90% of all the vitamin C now on the market in the USA is manufactured in China using GMO corn. Only buy corn free vitamin C to avoid GMO based vitamin C.

Deadly Sweetness

Aspartame, an artificial sweetener commercially known as Nutrasweet, Spoonful and Equal, has infiltrated the world market and has become almost as ubiquitous as the sugar it seeks to replace. From soda drinks to chewing gum, it offers a low-fat, low-calorie and no-sugar option enticing to diabetics and people who are trying to lose weight.

Strangely, diet products containing aspartame has been shown to actually cause weight gain, and the components that make up aspartame have also been found to be toxic in themselves. Why then, despite the numerous studies conducted on this substance finding it to have potentially harmful effects, is it still considered safe for human consumption?

Interview with Russell Blaylock

In an interview conducted by Betty Martini and Jon Baum over Personal Achievement Radio, Dr. Russell Blaylock, a respected neurosurgeon and author of the book “Excitotoxins: The Taste that Kills,” speaks about excitotoxins and shares his thoughts on why he believes aspartame is dangerous.

According to Dr. Blaylock, excitotoxins are substances that excite brain cells or neurons to the point of exhaustion and death. Normally, these substances act as transmitters, a substance allowing brain cells to relate with one another. However, these compounds are so harmful that the body keeps them in low concentrations. Anything that alters or increases these substances can cause neurodegeneration, degeneration of the spinal cord and the brain. Excitotoxins are normally found in plant substances, and, where most people are concerned, in food additives.

One of the components of NutraSweet or aspartame is aspartic acid, a powerful excitotoxin similar to glutamate. Moreover, phenylalanine, one of its components, an amino acid and a neurotoxin at high levels in the rain, has been known to cause seizures.

Dr. Blaylock goes on to add that what makes aspartame so dangerous is that it contains three neurotoxins: methanol, phenylalanine and aspartic acid. Methanol is a powerful neurotoxin whose exposure is carefully allowed by the EPA in minute levels in food and environmental exposure. Nutrasweet, however, provides levels that are seven times the amount the EPA will allow anyone to use. It’s been known to produce blindness and cellular destruction in the brain and spinal cord, particularly the optic nerves.

Aspartic acid, on the other hand, produces cellular excitation. It is an excitotoxin that causes cell death in the brain and significantly affects neural developments in infants, resulting in behavioral changes and even hyperactivity in children. Phenylalanine, like aspartic acid, can also alter brain development during fetal formation and create a lowering of the seizure threshold.

Phenylalanine and aspartic acid are both well-recognized neurotoxins and according to Dr. Blaylock, three neurotoxins in one mix are just unbelievable.

Neurological side effects

Today, aspartame is found in over 6,000 products and consumed by 250 million people world wide. There has been more report for aspartame reactions to the FDA than all other food additives put together. In 1988, 80 percent of complaints to the FDA about food additives were aspartame related. After more than 8,000 complaints on the side effect of NutraSweet, the FDA released a list of 92 side effects associated with aspartame consumption.

This is without taking into account other findings that show what aspartame can cause:

  • Destruction of kidney function– In a study conducted by scientists from Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston, it was discovered that subjects who drank more than two artificially sweetened beverages daily increased their risk of rapid kidney decline.
  • Headaches/migraines– In a study published in Headache:The Journal of Head and Face Pain, it was discovered that ingestion of aspartame by those who suffer migraines caused a significant increase in headache frequency for some subjects.
  • Increase of hunger and body weight– In an article published in theUT Health Science Center, it was revealed that diet soft drink consumption seemed much more related to the chances of becoming more overweight or obese.
  • Increase of the risk of preterm delivery– In a study funded by theCenter for Fetal Programming, Division of Epidemiology, a connection was discovered between the intake of artificially carbonated drinks and increased risk of preterm delivery.

 

  • Seizures and Convulsions– As early as 1987, a study was already conducted by Timothy Maher and Richard J. Wurtman who, through their work, discovered that aspartame potentially induces seizures.

 

  • Cancer– In a remarkably recent study conducted by the Ramazzini Institute, it was discovered that in rodents, aspartame was a carcinogenic agent in multiple sites with autopsies that showed a significant risk to lung and liver cancer.

 

Still legal?

Despite this, the aspartame is legal and is even promoted as a “healthy” dietary alternative for diabetics, cardiac disease suffers, those with weight problems. In my clinic, I am still amazed how many of the patients that I see that are suffering from many chronic diseases that consume large quanities of this harmful excitotoxin. For these patients, detoxifying their bodies from aspartame can often be as important a part of the treatment as addressing their presenting compliant.

Actually, you may have good reason to worry if several of your relatives have suffered from cardiac problems. There is a gene passed down in families that researchers say is the strongest marker for heart disease. But now there’s breaking news that shows you can actually change that genetic heritage.

No, we aren’t talking about some gene zapping drug or high tech genetic medical therapy. Instead, you simply need to eat a lot of raw natural fruit and veggies.

This is  the result of a study headed by an international team of scientists and directed by researchers at McMaster and McGill universities. These researchers have made an amazing discovery, which was just published in the journal PLoS Medicine: the gene responsible for much heart disease can be modified by eating generous amounts of fruits and raw vegetables.

“We know that 9p21 genetic variants increase the risk of heart disease for those that carry it,” Dr. Jamie Engert, joint principal investigator of the study, who is a researcher in cardiovascular diseases at the Research Institute of the McGill University Health Centre (RI-MUHC) and associate member in the Department of Human Genetics at McGill University, said in a media statement. “But it was a surprise to find that a healthy diet could significantly weaken its effect.”

Huge study investigated gene and diet link

The research represents one of the largest gene and diet interaction studies ever conducted on cardiovascular disease. It involved studying more than 27,000 individuals(European, South Asian, Chinese, Latin American and Arab) to see if what they ate had an effect on the 9p21 gene.

The results showed that individuals with the high risk genotype who ate a diet rich in mainly raw vegetables, fruits and berries, had no more risk of heart attack than people who lacked the heart disease-linked gene.

“We observed that the effect of a high-risk genotype can be mitigated by consuming a diet high in fruits and vegetables,”stated Sonia Anand. She is the joint principal investigator of the study, and a researcher at the Population Health Research Institute and a professor of medicine and epidemiology at the Michael G. DeGroote School of Medicine at McMaster University. Sonia also commented, “Our results support the public health recommendation to consume more than five servings of fruits or vegetables as a way to promote good health.”

According to the study’s lead author Dr. Ron Do (who conducted this research as part of his PhD at McGill and is now based at the Center for Human Genetics Research at the Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston), the new study suggests there may be an important interplay between genes and diet in cardiovascular disease. “Future research is necessary to understand the mechanism of this interaction, which will shed light on the underlying metabolic processes that the 9p21 gene is involved in,” Dr. Do said.

Vitamin C has many valuable attributes as a powerful antioxidant. Not only has it been shown to increase the ability of the immune system to fend off disease, but it also has a very positive effect for eradicating radiation from the body. Vitamin C is a water soluble vitamin with over 300 metabolic functions and is non-toxic in mega doses. Whatever the body does not utilize is excreted in the urine. The half life of vitamin C is approximately a half hour so it is in and out of your system rather quickly. Therefore to treat with vitamin C it must be taken relatively often over the course of the day to maintain saturation. Cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy have utilized mega doses of vitamin C for years in order to counter and protect themselves from radiation.

Vitamin C is one of the best defenses against the effects of cell damaging free radicals. Radiation causes proliferation of free radicals by breaking or damaging chemical bonds in DNA, leading to cell death. Dr Levy has a book titled, Vitamin C, Infections Diseases, & Toxins. In this book he indicates radiation toxicity can cause mutations, cancer, birth defects and bone marrow suppression and can negatively affect all the tissues of the body due to the increase in free radicals. He indicates mega doses of vitamin C are potent enough to cope with this threat to the body. Vitamin C has been shown to help the immune system sweep the body of free radicals and in doing so protect the body from the damaging effects associated with them. The recommended daily dose on average is anywhere from 1000mg-3000mg; however, many utilize a mega dose of up to 20,000mg a day. Linus Pauling indicated 20,000mg a day was the most his patients could tolerate orally. Intravenous vitamin C has been used at doses 10 times that level with no problems.

Vitamin C does more than protect against radiation, it also repairs damage from previous exposure. For example, researchers at Harvard Medical School indicated: “Our experiment showed that vitamin C can prevent damage from radiation…it somehow keeps the radiation from killing the cells.” Their experiment showed a dosage of 10grams (10,000mg) for humans exposed to extensive radiation had beneficial results protecting the body.

Vitamin C is well studied. Although many specific studies have not been completed to determine all the benefits of mega dose treatment with vitamin C, plenty of case studies indicate its positive attributes. Most notable is the ability of vitamin C to help the body recover and to protect vital bodily functions when undergoing radiation during chemotherapy. Although the radiation released from Japan’s nuclear plant is well above the exposure limit of chemotherapy, the levels of radiation on American soil are minimal at this time. Vitamin C supplementation at the minimum dosage of 1000-3000mg would be a wise and cheap source of protection against the effects of radiation in the air, food and soil.

Vitamin D has been in the news recently as more studies talk about the metabolic effects of the vitamin and why we need it. A new study has added to evidence for the need for vitamin D. In a study just published in the journal Cancer Epidemiology, Biomarkers & Prevention, scientists report that breast cancer patients with low levels of vitamin D have more aggressive tumors and a higher risk of recurrence.

This is not a surprising result for many physicians working with cancer patients, as the link between vitamin D and cancer in general is a fact. There is also a growing understanding that current intake recommendations are too low.

“Many oncologists are already following vitamin D levels in their breast cancer patients and recommending supplements for low levels,” said Dr. Laurie Kirstein, a breast surgeon at Beth Israel Medical Center in New York City. “To link vitamin D levels to the aggressiveness of a particular type of breast cancer is an interesting finding.” Dr. Kirstein added that this evidence should be followed up with a controlled trial.

The current study expands the general knowledge of vitamin D and cancer, putting the link into a context of a particular type of cancer and a particular cancer activity. The study, which examined 155 women at the University of Rochester, also found a link between low vitamin D levels and every major biological marker that is used to indicate prognosis of the disease.

“The magnitude of the findings was quite surprising,” said Luke J. Peppone, the lead researcher and Research Assistant Professor of Radiation Oncology. “Based on these results, doctors should strongly consider monitoring vitamin D levels among breast cancer patients and correcting them as needed.”

While this study still needs follow up with larger, controlled studies, it also reinforces a belief in the importance of vitamin D, or as the original publication puts it, the information here adds, “support to previous research that found decreased breast cancer survival among vitamin D deficient individuals.”

Current recommendations for vitamin D are 600 International Units (IU) per day for most people. Many researchers, however, regard this number as strangely low . Dr. Robert Heaney, who researches vitamin D at Creighton University, says that adults should be getting at least 4,000 IUs per day, still well within a safe upper limit of 10,000, and which may help protect against cancer and other diseases.
